What June Means for Nonprofits: Mid-Year Momentum, Mission, and Meaning
One thing I've learned working in the nonprofit sector, June can be a pivotal month for many nonprofits for several strategic, financial, and operational reasons. Here are a few considerations to keep you on track.
Mid-Year Review & Planning
- Midpoint Check-In: It’s halfway through the calendar year, making it a great time for reviewing progress on staff goals, strategic plans, fundraising goals, program outcomes, and budget performance.
- Course Correction: If metrics are off track, June is a time to adjust tactics for the second half of the year.
- Board Engagement: Many boards meet in June to review performance and reaffirm organizational priorities.
Fiscal Year-End Prep (for July–June FY Orgs)
- Closeout Activities: Nonprofits with a July–June fiscal year begin wrapping up financials, reconciling books, and preparing for audits or annual reports.
- Spending Down Funds: Organizations may need to spend down restricted or allocated funds before June 30.
- Grant Reporting: Many grant reports are due at the fiscal year-end.
Fundraising Momentum
- Spring Campaign Wrap-Up: Some organizations finish spring fundraising events and appeals.
- Donor Stewardship: Great time to thank mid-year donors, share your impact stories, and keep engagement warm before the busy fall giving season.
- Recurring Gifts Push: A strategic month to encourage monthly giving before summer lulls.
Programmatic Transition
- School-Year to Summer Programs: For youth or education-focused nonprofits, June marks a transition from school-year programs to summer programming.
- Seasonal Services: Homeless shelters, food pantries, and health programs may adjust services due to seasonal needs.
Awareness and Advocacy - June is rich with cause awareness campaigns that nonprofits can align with, including:
- Pride Month – LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion.
- Juneteenth – Celebrating Black freedom and advocating for racial justice.
- World Refugee Day (June 20) – Support and advocacy for displaced persons.
- Men’s Health Month – Campaigns related to mental and physical health.
Staff Wellness and Planning
- Support Staff: Consider offering staff flexible schedules or online professional development.
- Burnout Prevention: Summer months are critical for encouraging staff downtime like long weekends, vacations and well-being.
- Organization Development: Some organizations host fun staff retreats, workshops, or all-staff and board planning days.
Make June a time to reflect, realign, and refuel! Whether you’re wrapping up your fiscal year or planning summer or year end programs, staying intentional now will set you up for a strong second half of the year.
