*Building a Budget That Works - And Managing It All Year Long

A key component of financial sustainability is the commitment of board and staff to disciplined financial management—timely review of reports, proactive planning, and responsible oversight of both income and expenses. Building a budget is one part of that work, but true stability requires understanding how to manage expenses strategically, assess cost drivers, prevent waste, and make purchasing decisions that align with mission and capacity. Approval of the annual budget remains a foundational governance responsibility, but sustainability depends on how well the organization manages to that budget throughout the year.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to build a budget with and without historical data
  • Income-based budgeting vs. expense-based budgeting
  • How to build in contingencies, the unknown, and destabilizing events
  • Basics of the Chart of Accounts
  • Strategies to monitor, modify, and manage expenses to maintain long-term stability

*Please note, this is not a QuickBooks class or an Accounting class. We are not CPA's nor will this workshop replace the expertise a bookkeeper or CPA provides.

Appropriate for: Nonprofit leaders, staff, and all current and incoming board members.
