"Communication is one of the most important skills you require for a successful life.”

Have you ever had a challenging conversation only to find, days later, you are still replaying it in your head and wishing you could have handled it better?

Communication, or lack thereof, is usually at the center of conflict within the workplace.  Awareness of styles and high-level skills around communication and conflict management help develop a work culture where engagement and creative and innovative thought are fostered and become commonplace.  Strong communication skills give us the necessary tools to follow a path of healthy communication instead of defaulting to a communication pattern in which we totally avoid difficult, yet necessary, conversations or dive right in and handle them badly.

Nonprofit Network has several resources including our upcoming Communications and Conflict Management Course led by a Capacity Building Consultant with years of communication and coaching experience.  Utilizing tools including “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes are High”; Assessments to help identify your communication and conflict management styles and Coaching techniques, the 7-session virtual course is slated to begin this Spring or early Summer and follows a syllabus designed to help participants develop positive communication skills and practices.  Geared for staff who are seeking to increase and improve their interactions with clients, peers, volunteers, donors and other organizational stakeholders, sessions will include structured conversations around assigned reading and homework.

Participants will gain knowledge around key topics including:

  • Navigating and mastering difficult and critical conversations
  • Conflict resolution styles
  • Communication styles
  • Seven levels of listening
  • Listening barriers
  • Empowering questions
  • Disempowering questions
