Zoe Lyons
Capacity Builder
I am proud to be the newest member of the incredible team at Nonprofit Network. After 34 years dedicated to public service with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), I am inspired to continue my journey. Graduating from Michigan State University (Go Green!) marked the beginning of my commitment to serving others. My first role involved working with families and individuals on assistance programs like Medicaid, Food Assistance, and Cash Assistance, igniting my passion for ensuring everyone is treated with dignity and respect—a value instilled in me by my parents.
The positive feedback I received from managers and the families I served reinforced the importance of compassion in my work. Eager to grow, I embraced every opportunity to learn, with my transition into child welfare being particularly transformative. This field demands heartfelt dedication and poses constant questions about what is right and just. My 33 years in child welfare have fundamentally shaped me into a better leader, mother, spouse, friend, and human being.
In the last decade at MDHHS, I discovered my true calling in addressing childhood trauma, especially Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and championing antiracism work. These areas have become the guiding light of my role as director of the Jackson County office. I have come to understand how ACEs impact lives from infancy to old age and how systemic racism influences our experiences.
Having served in various roles throughout my career, I have found there is something truly special about working with community leaders. The relationships I have forged through shared experiences are vital to our collective success. They empower me to effect positive changes, from educating over 10,000 individuals on Adverse Childhood Experiences to introducing Handle With Care to Michigan. By sharing my equity and antiracism journey, I have inspired hundreds in our community and invited colleagues statewide to engage deeply in this work.
With the wisdom of author Layla Saad guiding me, I aspire to be a “good ancestor.” I embrace my responsibility as a white leader to invite others into the transformative work of trauma and antiracism. This journey of growth and learning is lifelong, and I encourage you to join me on this path. My engagement with trauma and equity has been pivotal in making a meaningful impact.
I will be the best version of myself for Nonprofit Network, and every organization we partner with as I take on my role as a Capacity Building Consultant.
Please feel free to reach out to me, I'm happy to help support you.
